SALISBURY, N.C. (Jan. 23) – Kamya Renwicks (Sr./Baltimore, MD) scored a career-high 26 points and added five assists, four rebounds and four steals as Saint Augustine's University rallied from a late deficit to force overtime before defeating Livingstone College 78-73 in a CIAA Southern Division women's basketball contest at New Trent Gymnasium Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Shankia Clark (Sr./Orlando, FL) added 14 points and eight rebounds and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) finished with 11 points and five rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who have won two of their last three games, all on the road. The Lady Falcons (2-5 CIAA, 7-10 overall) have become road warriors this season, winning four of seven away games.
The victory against the Lady Blue Bears (4-6 CIAA, 7-10 overall) was a nail-biter. The game appeared to slip away from SAU, who trailed by six with 4:30 remaining in regulation, but Shankia Clark scored on three offensive putbacks sandwiched around a Kiana Clark (Sr./Queens, NY) three-pointer to put the Lady Falcons ahead by one (63-62) with a little over a minute remaining.
The Lady Blue Bears regained the lead on a steal and layup, but Kiana Clark connected on 1 of 2 free throws with 11 seconds remaining to tie the score. The Lady Falcons prevented the Lady Blue Bears from getting a shot off as the horn sounded.
The extra session went back-and-forth with both teams trading leads, but the Lady Falcons made one final push to grab the victory. Trailing by one point, the Lady Falcons tightened up defensively, which keyed a 7-0 run capped by Caraballo's layup for a 75-69 lead with under a minute left.
Renwicks finished off the Lady Blue Bears from that point. She was 3 of 4 from the charity stripe including two free throws with nine seconds remaining after the Lady Blue Bears pulled within 76-73.
Several Lady Falcons contributed mightily in addition to the double-figure scorers. Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA) had eight points and seven rebounds and Kiana Clark chipped in seven points. Milequa Eason (Jr./Woodland, NC) tallied six points, six rebounds and three steals.
For the Lady Blue Bears, Daisa Harris had 23 points, five assists and five steals to lead four double-figure scorers. But Harris was held to zero points in overtime by the Lady Falcons' defense.
After three road games in a row, the Lady Falcons head back to Emery Gymnasium for a four-game homestand, starting with a Southern Division matchup against crosstown rival Shaw University on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m.
