SAU Women's Basketball Handles Crosstown Rival Shaw 73-60

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 25) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) appears to be gelling at the right time.

The Lady Falcons picked up their third women's basketball win in four games after trouncing crosstown rival Shaw University 73-60 in a CIAA Southern Division matchup at packed Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.

SAU (3-5 CIAA, 8-10 overall) started slowly this season but gained steam recently. Saturday's victory was the second in a row for the Lady Falcons, who are two away from reaching the 10-win mark for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Defense has been the calling card of the Lady Falcons, who has held three of their last four opponents to 60 points or less. The Lady Bears (2-8 CIAA, 6-13 overall) were held to a single digit in the first half as the Lady Falcons spurted out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the first period.

Led by a balanced scoring attack featuring Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA), the Lady Falcons had a handle on the game from the outset. They were ahead by 24 points in the fourth period before holding off a late Shaw rally.

The Lady Bears managed to get within eight at 64-56 with 1:26 remaining in the fourth period, but Kamya Renwicks (Sr./Baltimore, MD) halted the run with a free throw and then a steal, which led to two free throws by Williams to stretch the lead to 11 points.

The Lady Bears cut the margin to nine but SAU free throws kept the visitors at bay.

Renwicks' steal was characteristic of the Lady Falcons' defense on Saturday. They scored 23 points off 16 Shaw miscues.

Williams poured in 16 points for the Lady Falcons, who defeated Shaw for the third time in five games. Milequa Eason (Jr./Woodland, NC) added 15 points and Tanisha Wall (Sr./Franklinton, NC) and Quiera Gilmore (Sr./Charlotte, NC) both registered 10 points. Renwicks had eight points, four assists and two steals and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) finished with six points, four assists and two steals.

Ariana Fleming scored 19 points and Dejoria Howard added 14 points for the Lady Bears, who host the Lady Falcons in a rematch on Feb. 14.

The Lady Falcons have a big test coming up Monday, Jan. 27, against Johnson C. Smith University, currently second in the Southern Division. They are ready for the challenge, however, based on their recent success.
