SAU Women's Basketball Falls Late At Home Against Johnson C. Smith

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 27) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) climbed back in the game after falling behind early, but fell in the late stages of a 65-57 CIAA women's basketball loss to Johnson C. Smith University at Emery Gymnasium on Monday.

SAU trailed by double digits in the first half, but Nia Phillips (Jr./Bronx, NY) nailed a three-pointer and Kamya Renwicks (Sr./Baltimore, MD) hit a free throw for a 52-51 Lady Falcons' lead in the fourth period. The contest was decided in the final five minutes, however, as the Lady Falcons were outscored
14-5.

Quiera Gilmore (Sr./Charlotte, NC) scored 14 points to lead the Lady Falcons, whose two-game winning streak was snapped. Renwicks added 13 points and five assists and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) scored 13 points.

SAU trailed by 11 in the second period and but made its move in the third period. Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA) buried a jumper for a 44-40 Lady Falcons' lead, and the period ended with the score tied 46-46. The Lady Falcons outscored the Golden Bulls 23-17 in the third period.

The Golden Bulls (6-4 CIAA, 10-9 overall) opened the fourth period with a three-point lead before the Lady Falcons surged ahead for the first time in the period. JCSU finished strong down the stretch to get the win.


Aubriana Bonner scored 15 points and Le'Zarea Bowens had 12 for the Golden Bulls, who outscored the Lady Falcons 21-7 in turnover points. Maiya Green chipped in 11 points and DeNajah Porter collected 13 rebounds.

The Lady Falcons (3-6 CIAA, 8-11 overall) play their third consecutive home game on Wednesday, Jan. 29, against Claflin University at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
