SAU Men's Basketball Edges Virginia Union In Final Seconds For Second Straight Win

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 7) – Saint Augustine's University captured its second straight impressive men's basketball victory on Monday, edging Virginia Union University 79-78 at Emery Gymnasium.

Coming off a home win over regionally-ranked Glenville State on Friday, the Falcons went toe-to-toe with Virginia Union before slipping past the Panthers. Though the game was deemed a non-conference matchup between both CIAA teams, the victory was significant because the Panthers are considered one of the top contenders for the league crown.

The Falcons (4-8 overall) survived a wild ending to pull out the win. Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) canned two free throws with 11.9 seconds left for a 79-76 lead, but the Panthers pulled back within one on two free throws after an intentional foul with 7.9 seconds left.

The Panthers (9-5 overall) stole a long pass near midcourt on the in-bounds play, but the Falcons forced a loose ball in the paint near VUU's basket. Both teams scrambled for possession as time expired.

The deflection that sealed the win reflected the Falcons' effort against a physical Panthers' team in an intense game. SAU battled the Panthers throughout as neither team pulled away.

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) was ultimately the difference for the Falcons. Named CIAA Player of the Week on Monday, the SAU guard followed up a 25-point effort in the Glenville State victory with 23 points against the Panthers, including five three-pointers. His three-point buckets kept the Falcons ahead late in the second half, and he nailed 3 of 4 free throws with under a minute remaining to give the Falcons the margin it needed to hold on.

Gaddy added 11 points and Aaron Johnson-Cash (So./San Francisco, CA) scored 10 points for the Falcons. Vernon McWhite (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) came off the bench to provide good offense (9 points) and defense down low.

The Panthers stayed close behind the play of Terrell Leach (28 points) and Raemaad Wright (20 points), but could not overtake SAU down the stretch, thanks to the Falcons' defense, which came up with key stops in the second half.

The Falcons will try for their third straight win on Saturday, Jan. 11, against Lincoln (Pa.) University at Emery Gymnasium, starting at 4 p.m. The non-conference game between CIAA teams is the third in a four-game homestand for the Falcons.
