SAU Men's Basketball Prevails In OT Against Claflin

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 30) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) played in overtime for the second straight game, but this time the Falcons came out on top.

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) scored 17 points and Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Falcons outlasted Claflin University 62-59 in a CIAA Southern Division men's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The victory was the third in four games for SAU, which outscored the Panthers 8-5 in the extra period.

On Monday, Jan. 27, the Falcons battled Johnson C. Smith University to the wire before falling by five in overtime. The outcome in Wednesday's game was much better.

The Falcons opened a 60-55 lead in OT thanks to two consecutive layups by Nilous Hodge (So./Charlotte, NC). They maintained their five-point margin on a dunk by Brown with 2:28 remaining.

Despite SAU's stellar play in OT, the contest nearly went to a second overtime. The Panthers pulled within three points, and the Falcons missed two free throws in the final 19 seconds. But SAU twice prevented Claflin from converting at the other end to close out the game.

Hodge tallied nine points for the Falcons, who outscored the Panthers 19-14 in turnover points and 30-20 in inside points. Vernon McWhite (Jr./Fayetteville, NC) contributed eight points for the Falcons, who shot 40 percent in the defensive battle.

In regulation, the Falcons led 54-52 on Jefferson's three-pointer, but the Panthers made two free throws with 27 seconds left to send the game into overtime. The lead changed four times in the second half with neither team leading by more than five points.

The first half was also close as the lead switched five times. The Falcons, behind 10 points from Brown, took a 35-33 lead at the halftime break.

Letrell West paced the Panthers (6-6 CIAA, 10-12 overall) with 15 points. Devin Smith and Brandon Davis scored 11 points each for the Panthers, who were limited to 34.7 percent shooting.

The Falcons (3-7 CIAA, 8-12 overall) play their fourth consecutive home game on Saturday, Feb. 1, against Fayetteville State University. Tipoff is 4 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
