SAU Women's Basketball Nearly Stuns CIAA Southern Division Leader Fayetteville State In 48-45 Loss

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 1) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) battled Southern Division leader Fayetteville State University down the wire before falling 48-45 in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Lady Falcons almost sent the game into overtime, but their potential game-tying three-pointer from the corner was off the mark as time expired.

Kiana Clark (Sr./Baltimore, MD) scored 10 points and Milequa Eason (Jr./Woodland, NC) and Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) both added nine points for the Lady Falcons, who limited the Broncos to 31 percent shooting, about 10 percent below their average, which ranks second in the CIAA.

The Lady Falcons held the Broncos (9-2 CIAA, 12-8 overall) to their second-lowest point total this season. It also tied for the fewest amount of points by an SAU opponent this season.

The Lady Falcons clamped down defensively after falling behind 10-0 in the first period. Caraballo swished a three-pointer for a 43-42 lead with 2:34 left in the fourth period, but the Lady Falcons were outscored 6-2 down the stretch.

Down 45-43, the Lady Falcons turned the ball over with 17 seconds left. The Broncos added a free throw for a three-point lead, but Kamya Renwicks (Sr./Baltimore, MD) scored on a driving layup to get the Lady Falcons within 46-45 with seven seconds left. The Broncos connected on two free throws before the Lady Falcons misfired behind the three-point arc as time ran out.

Aminata Johnson scored 14 points and Katisha Hyman added 11 points for the Broncos. Chantel Williams pumped in 10 points.

After a four-game home stretch, the Lady Falcons (3-8 CIAA, 8-13 overall) prepare for two road games in three days, starting with a conference visit to Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va., on Monday, Feb. 3. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
