SAU Women's Basketball Tops Crosstown Rival Shaw For First Season Sweep Since 2008-09 Season

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 14) – Milequa Eason (Jr./Woodland, NC) tallied 18 points, eight steals and seven rebounds and Kaaliya Williams (Sr./Richmond, VA) totaled 18 points and nine rebounds as Saint Augustine's University rallied past Shaw University 71-65 at Spaulding Gymnasium to sweep the season series for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

The Lady Falcons won the first meeting 73-60 at Emery Gymnasium on Jan. 25.

Angela Caraballo (Sr./Richmond, VA) added 16 points for the Lady Falcons (10-16 overall, 5-11 CIAA), who earned 10 wins for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Shankia Clark (Sr./Orlando, FL) nearly posted a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds for SAU, which outrebounded Shaw 47-33, including a 19-5 advantage on the offensive boards.

Eason tied a career high in points and set a career high in steals against Shaw. She sparked a fourth-period rally with her tenacious defense and all-out hustle that turned an eight-point deficit into a six-point Southern Division victory.

Her steal led to a Williams' layup that tied the score at 60-60 with 2:32 left. The Lady Falcons took the lead for good at 63-62 when Eason made the first of two free throw attempts. She chased down her miss on the second attempt that led to a Williams' jumper for a three-point lead with 1:26 remaining.

Eason added two free throws and a layup off her steal for a 70-62 lead with 17 seconds left that iced the game for the Lady Falcons, who shot 57.1 percent in the fourth period. The Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Bears 25-11 in the fourth period after trailing much of the game.

Led by Eason, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Bears 33-11 in bench points as their superior depth eventually wore down Shaw.

Amani Moxley scored 14 points and Ariana Fleming added 13 points for the Lady Bears (6-18 overall, 2-13 CIAA), who had four players score in double figures. Sydni Callis scored 11 points and Dejoria Howard pumped in 10 points.

The Lady Bears outshot the Lady Falcons from the floor (42.3 to 40.6) but the Lady Falcons made more free throws (16 of 28 to 14 of 18). SAU outscored its archrival in second chance points (12 to 8), turnover points (27-24) and points in the paint (28-24).

The Lady Falcons close out the regular season next week with two away games, starting with a non-conference matchup against CIAA Northern Division foe Elizabeth City State University on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
