Big Second Half Keys SAU Men's Basketball Victory Over Crosstown Rival Shaw

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 15) – Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points as Saint Augustine's University dominated the second half to topple Shaw University 79-59 in a CIAA Southern Division men's basketball contest at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Falcons swept the season series over their crosstown rival for the first time in four years. In late January, they defeated the Bears 105-94 at Emery Gymnasium.

Miguel Brown (Jr./Wilson, NC) added 14 points and eight rebounds and Hirk Williams (Sr./Manassas, VA) had 13 points and nine boards for the Falcons, who outscored the Bears 53-28 in the second half to erase a five-point halftime deficit. Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) registered 12 points and Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) poured in 10 points. Karaan Clemonts (Jr./Weldon, NC) chipped in nine points for the Falcons, who outscored the Bears 20-7 in turnover points and 31-20 in bench points.

The Falcons opened the second half with a 31-9 run to take control of the contest. They led 57-40 around the midway point and the margin stayed in double digits the rest of the way.

After a cold-shooting first half, SAU pulled away by shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and limiting Shaw to 33.3 percent shooting after halftime. The Falcons were especially hot from the perimeter, making 7 of 12 three-point attempts for 58.3 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Bears were 1 of 8 behind the arc for 12.5 percent.

The Falcons (10-16 overall, 5-11 CIAA) cashed in on trips to the charity stripe, connecting on 18 of 23 free throws in the second half for 78.3 percent. For the contest, SAU was 26 of 32 from the free throw line for 81.3 percent while Shaw was 15 of 23 for 65.2 percent.

The first half was a stark contrast from the second half for the Falcons, who shot 25 percent from the floor, including 14.2 percent behind the three-point line in the opening 20 minutes. They made 8 of 9 free throws for 88.9 percent to stay close. Shaw connected on 44.4 percent of its shots to build a 31-26 halftime lead.

Greyson Kelley paced the Bears (5-20 overall, 2-13 CIAA) with 16 points. Josue Kamba added 11 points.

Two away games remain for the Falcons before the CIAA Tournament begins in late February. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, they take a trip to Elizabeth City, N.C., for a non-conference matchup against Elizabeth City State University of the CIAA Northern Division. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
