SAU Volleyball Tops Virginia Union At CIAA Round-Up 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 18) – Madison Jones (Fr./Durham, NC) and Tionna Graham (Jr./Portmore, Jamaica) powered Saint Augustine's University past Virginia Union 3-1 in the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up 2 in Ettrick, Va., on Sunday.

Jones and Graham both recorded 17 kills to spark the Lady Falcons to a 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 victory against their Northern Division foe at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Jones added three blocks and Graham added three service aces.


Sydney Moore (So./West Bloomfield, MI) played a fabulous all-around match, finishing with nine kills, three service aces, 17 assists, and 11 digs. Zakiya Freeman (Fr./Riverdale, GA) had 23 assists and two blocks and Janina Mayers (Sr./Christ Church, Barbados) collected 16 digs for the Lady Falcons (5-5 CIAA, 7-10 overall), currently tied for second in the Southern Division standings at 3-1.


Essence Poteat led Virginia Union (3-7 CIAA, 4-9 overall) with 17 kills, seven digs, three aces, and one block.


The Lady Falcons regrouped against Virginia Union after falling to Northern Division opponents Shaw (21-25, 14-25, 25-20, 11-25) on Saturday and Bowie State (19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 23-25) on Sunday at the roundup.


Against Shaw, Graham recorded 16 kills and Jones added 11 kills. Moore and Freeman contributed 20 assists and 16 assists, respectfully, and Lisanne Roofe (Sr./Spanish Town, Jamaica) chipped in 15 digs. Mayers added 13 digs.


Mallory Brown finished with 16 kills for Shaw (9-1 CIAA, 10-5 overall).


Against Bowie State, Jones amassed 22 kills and Graham added 20 kills and five aces for the Lady Falcons. Moore accumulated 27 assists and Mayers totaled 23 digs.


Freeman had 18 assists, 14 digs and four aces.


Bowie State (2-8 CIAA, 3-14) was led by Lydia Lanier with 17 kills.


The Lady Falcons finish out the remainder of their regular-season schedule against Southern Division opponents, starting with Winston-Salem State at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m.
