SAU Volleyball Falls To Claflin On Senior Day

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 1) – Saint Augustine's University fell to Claflin 3-0 Monday in the final home volleyball match of the season for the Lady Falcons.

The Lady Falcons are now fourth in the CIAA Southern Division at 4-4. Claflin is second at 6-2.

A ceremony was held for four Lady Falcons on Senior Day at Emery Gymnasium. Tia Jones (Sr./Bridgetown, Barbados), Lisanne Roofe (Sr./Spanish Town, Jamaica), Malique Webb (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) and Janina Mayers (Sr./Christ Church, Barbados) were honored before the match.

The highlight of the ceremony was a surprise appearance from Mayers' mother. Mayers was not expecting to see her mom, who had never seen Mayers play collegiate volleyball in person until Monday.

Stunned by the surprise, Mayers ran towards her mom, and they embraced each other with a hug.

Tionna Graham (Jr./Portmore, Jamaica) led the Lady Falcons with nine kills followed by Madison Jones (Fr./Durham, NC) with eight kills. Maegan Williams (Fr./Durham, NC) added five kills, two aces, one block, and six digs.

Sydney Moore (So./West Bloomfield, MI) had 23 assists and two aces, and Mayers had nine digs.

Simone Newell finished with eight kills for Claflin (12-9 overall), which won 25-20, 25-15, 25-16.

The Lady Falcons (8-13 overall) visit Fayetteville State on Thursday, Nov. 4, in Fayetteville, N.C. The match starts at 6 p.m.
