SAU Women's Basketball Falls To JCSU Down The Stretch

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 20) - Saint Augustine's University fell to Johnson C. Smith 66-63 in a CIAA women's basketball contest that went down to the wire on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

The outcome was decided on two plays in the final 17 seconds of a tie game. Shaniya Jones of JCSU made two free throws for a 64-62 lead after drawing a blocking foul.

On the other end of the court, Jada Swafford (Sr./Alexandria, LA) of the Lady Falcons scored a layup to tie the game, but the basket was nullified on a charging call.

Two free throws by Jones with four seconds left put the game out of reach and gave JCSU the victory.

The Lady Falcons are 1-1 in the Southern Division, 1-5 in the CIAA and 5-9 overall. The Golden Bulls are 2-0 in the Southern Division, 2-3 in the CIAA and 7-6 overall.

Taniyah Greene (Fr./Cheltenham, MD) led the Lady Falcons with 15 points and Raquel Cassidy (Jr./Gainesville, FL) added 12 points and nine rebounds. Swafford chipped in 10 points.

Jones of the Golden Bulls led all scorers with 21 points.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair as neither team seized control until the fourth period. The Lady Falcons spurted to a nine-point lead before the Golden Bulls rallied for the victory.

After playing four home games in seven days, the Lady Falcons will take a two-day break before playing two games in two days.

They are scheduled to visit Claflin on Saturday, Jan. 22, and host Bowie State on Sunday, Jan. 23.
