SAU Women's Basketball Edges Claflin On Eason's Free Throws

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 12) - Milequa Eason (Grad./Woodland, NC) swished two free throws with 0.3 seconds left to lift Saint Augustine's University over Claflin University 63-61 in a CIAA women's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Lady Falcons improved to 4-4 in the Southern Division, 4-10 in the CIAA and 8-14 overall. The Lady Panthers fell to 3-5 in the Southern Division, 5-9 in the CIAA and 8-14 overall.

The game appeared headed for overtime after the Lady Falcons missed a shot with time running down in regulation. Eason saved the day when she grabbed the rebound and was fouled on the putback attempt.

Eason calmly sank both free throws for the final margin. The Lady Panthers' last attempt was short as time expired.

Raquel Cassidy (Jr./Gainesville, FL) posted a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Lady Falcons. Both points and rebounds are season highs for Cassidy, who recorded her second double-double of the season.

Lauren Banks (Fr./Clinton, MD) added 10 points and two steals and Taniyah Greene (Fr./Cheltenham, MD) contributed nine points.

Jada Swafford (Jr./Alexandria, LA) had six points and seven assists and Bre'cha Byrd (Fr./Surry County, VA) collected six points and six rebounds. Summer Dilwood (So./Atlanta, GA) and Eason each scored six points.

Janelle Sample scored 20 points for the Lady Panthers, who rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes before the Lady Falcons pulled out the win, thanks to Eason's free throws.

Claflin nearly led the entire first half but the Lady Falcons stayed close, trailing 27-26 at the break.

The Lady Falcons gained the lead right before the third period ended. They took control of the fourth period before the Lady Panthers rallied, which set up the final frantic seconds.

The Lady Falcons play their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Livingstone in Salisbury, N.C. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m.
