SAU Women's Basketball Topples Fayetteville State On Senior Day

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 19) - CIAA Rookie of the Week Lauren Banks (Fr./Clinton, MD) led a balanced attack with 17 points as Saint Augustine's University celebrated Senior Day with an 85-77 women's basketball victory over Fayetteville State at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Lady Falcons ended the regular season tied for the second-best record in the Southern Division (6-4). They are 6-10 in the CIAA and 10-14 overall.

The Broncos fell to 6-4 in the Southern Division, 10-6 in the CIAA and 13-11 overall.

Jada Swafford (Sr./Alexandria, LA) added 15 points and Milequa Eason (Grad./Woodland, NC) contributed 13 points, five steals and five rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who extended their winning streak to three games entering the CIAA Tournament next week in Baltimore.

Bre'cha Byrd (Fr./Surry County, VA) had a season-high 13 points and seven rebounds and Taniyah Greene (Fr./Cheltenham, MD) finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Raquel Cassidy (Jr./Gainesville, FL) chipped in six points and five rebounds and Summer Dilwood (So./Atlanta, GA) had five points and three steals.

The trio of Swafford, Greene and Byrd led a Lady Falcons' bench that outscored the Broncos' bench 47-9.

It was truly a team effort for the Lady Falcons, who snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Broncos. The Lady Falcons built a 40-30 halftime lead and weathered a second-half run by the Broncos, who trailed 54-53 in the fourth period. 

The Lady Falcons never wilted, extending their lead to 80-69 on Swafford's free throw with 1:46 remaining.

Imani Elliott led the Broncos with 24 points, five steals and five assists. Rasheka Simmons added 20.

After the victory, the seniors of the Lady Falcons' basketball team, the men's basketball team and the men's and women's track & field/cross country teams were honored.

Five Lady Falcon seniors - Eason, Swafford, Nyasia Barnes (Bertie, NC), Destiny Byfield (Brooklyn, NY) and Jordyn Burton (Durham, NC) - were recognized.

The Lady Falcons now await the CIAA Tournament women's bracket pairings, which will be released Sunday, Feb. 20.
