PETERSBURG, VA --The Saint Augustine's men's basketball team got a 28-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-63 to the Virginia State Trojans on the road Saturday.
The Falcons (5-8, 1-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Jordan Love, who had 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Jalen Williams tacked on 10 points off of the bench and MacNasa Hughes added four points and three steals.
The Saint Augustine's defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 19 Virginia State turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hughes' three steals led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After falling behind 26-18, Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run with 5:40 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from George Jones, to narrow its deficit to 26-23. Virginia State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Falcons down 40-35 entering halftime.
Virginia State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 55-39 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 55-44 with 13:38 to go in the contest. Virginia State responded and outscored the Falcons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 78-63. Saint Augustine's got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 15 of its 28 total points.
