RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's men's basketball team held Virginia Union to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 63-57 win against the Panthers at home Thursday.
The Falcons (6-8, 2-3) had two players score in double figures, led by MacNasa Hughes, who had 19 points, three steals and three blocks. Jordan Love tacked on 11 points and Chris Volo added five points, two steals and three blocks.
Saint Augustine's did a great job disrupting Virginia Union shots in the contest, coming away with eight blocks. Volo's three rejections led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 22-19 advantage, Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run with 5:39 left in the first half to increase its lead to 27-19. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 27-24 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 27 points close to the basket.
Saint Augustine's kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Hughes' three, to grow the lead to 49-39 with 4:46 to go in the contest. The Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 63-57 win. Saint Augustine's got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 36 total points.
