Saint Augustine's gets 40 bench points in 73-46 win over Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team got a 40-point performance from the bench on the way to a 73-46 win over the Pfeiffer Falcons on the road Tuesday.

The Falcons (5-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had 14 points. Lauren Banks tacked on 11 points and three steals and Janiya Reed chipped in as well with 10 points and three steals off of the bench.

Saint Augustine's took advantage of excellent ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 16 assists on 31 made field goals. Individually, Joscelyn Meyers was on top of the distribution list for the Falcons with four assists and Iyania Evans also contributed with three assists of her own.

Saint Augustine's defense held Pfeiffer to only 27.1 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 7-6 advantage, Saint Augustine's went on a 12-0 run with 5:46 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Evans, to increase its lead to 19-6, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Saint Augustine's did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 19 points close to the basket.

Saint Augustine's kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 40 seconds mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Greene, to increase its lead to 33-24, a score that would hold until halftime. Saint Augustine's saw non-starters score four of its 14 total points off the bench in the quarter.

Saint Augustine's continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Prophet Sheffield, to expand its lead further to 47-28 with 4:45 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Falcons had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-35 edge. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 20 points in the paint.

Saint Augustine's kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Reed's layup, to grow the lead to 63-37 with 5:31 to go in the contest. The Falcons kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 73-46 win. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
