RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's men's basketball team got a 29-point performance from the bench on the way to an 86-72 victory against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls at home Monday.
The Falcons (9-8, 5-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Nemo Johnson, who secured a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Love added 13 points and eight rebounds and MacNasa Hughes chipped in as well with 12 points.
Saint Augustine's shared the ball well in Monday's game, racking up 17 assists on 30 made field goals. Johnson's five assists led the Falcons.
The Saint Augustine's defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 15 Johnson C. Smith turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Johnson's three steals led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After playing to a 20-20 tie, Saint Augustine's went on an 8-0 run with 7:46 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from George Jones, to take a 28-20 lead. The Falcons then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 40-28 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 40 points close to the basket.
Saint Augustine's kept its lead intact before going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Hughes' three, to grow the lead to 67-52 with 6:51 to go in the contest. The Golden Bulls narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 86-72 win. Saint Augustine's got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 25 of its 46 total points.
