RALEIGH, NC --Jawan Browder hit a shot with just five seconds left in the game to put the Saint Augustine's men's basketball team up for good in a 53-52 win against the Claflin Panthers at home Wednesday.
Browder led the Falcons (10-9, 6-4) with 16 points, six rebounds and two steals. Nemo Johnson also added six points and eight rebounds and Jalen Williams chipped in as well with six points and six assists.
Saint Augustine's out-rebounded Claflin 43-38 in Wednesday's game, led by Johnson's eight boards. The Falcons also collected 12 offensive rebounds and scored 15 second chance points.
Saint Augustine's defense held Claflin to only 36.4 percent shooting from the field, including 11.1 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie, Saint Augustine's went on a 12-0 run with 18:32 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Browder, to take a 14-2 lead. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 30-21 advantage. Saint Augustine's relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 30 points.
The Panthers proceeded to tie things up at 46-46 before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Williams' jumper, to seize a 51-46 lead with 2:43 to go in the contest. The Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still held on for the 53-52 win. Saint Augustine's took care of business in the paint, recording 12 of its 23 points in the lane.
