RALEIGH, NC --Keziah Soogrim racked up 10 rebounds, but the Saint Augustine's women's basketball team fell to the Shaw Bears 64-62 on the road Saturday.
The Falcons (9-9, 3-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Lauren Banks, who had 19 points and five assists. Taniyah Greene added 15 points and six rebounds and Soogrim added six points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
Saint Augustine's shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 17 assists on 27 made field goals. Banks' five assists led the Falcons and Shikira Perry also helped out with five assists of her own.
Saint Augustine's forced 23 Shaw turnovers while committing 17 themselves in Saturday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 21 points on the other end of the floor. Soogrim's three steals led the way for Saint Augustine's.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-5, Saint Augustine's went on a 7-0 run with 4:41 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Soogrim, to take a 12-10 lead. The Falcons then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 17-13 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Shaw rallied to take a 27-21 lead before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run starting at the 1:42 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Perry, to narrow its deficit to 27-26, a score that would hold until halftime.
Saint Augustine's came out of halftime on fire, going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Greene, to grab a 31-27 lead with 9:13 to go in the third. Shaw responded to seize a 46-41 lead entering the fourth quarter. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 15 points in the paint.
Shaw kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-43 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Banks' layup, to seize a 52-51 lead with 6:05 to go in the contest. Shaw re-asserted control, outscoring the Falcons 13-10 the rest of the way to hand Saint Augustine's the 64-62 loss. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
