RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team held Livingstone to just 10 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-20 shooting performance on the way to a 95-52 victory over the Blue Bears at home Wednesday.
The Falcons (10-9, 4-7) had five players score in double figures, led by Lauren Banks, who had 15 points and five steals. Janiya Reed added 15 points and four assists off the bench and Taniyah Greene helped out with 12 points.
Saint Augustine's shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 15 assists on 35 made field goals. Reed's four assists led the Falcons and Joscelyn Meyers also helped out with three assists of her own.
The Saint Augustine's defense held Livingstone shooters to only 28.1 percent from the field, including 10 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, Saint Augustine's went on a 7-0 run with 9:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Greene, to take a 7-2 lead. The Falcons then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 16-9 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
Saint Augustine's kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:29 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Keziah Soogrim, to increase its lead to 30-16. The Falcons proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 36-19 advantage heading into halftime. Saint Augustine's forced six Livingstone turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
Following intermission, Saint Augustine's continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 40-21 before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Banks, to expand its lead further to 49-21 with 7:43 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Falcons added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 67-35 edge. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring 20 of its 31 points in the paint.
Saint Augustine's kept widening that lead, expanding it to 80-45 before going on an 11-0 run to grow the lead to 91-45 with 3:50 to go in the contest. The Blue Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 95-52 win. Saint Augustine's took advantage of nine Livingstone turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of those takeaways.
