Defensive effort leads Saint Augustine's past Livingstone 80-71

RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's men's basketball team kept Livingstone to just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-21 shooting performance on the way to an 80-71 win over the Blue Bears at home Wednesday.

The Falcons (11-10, 7-4) had three players score in double figures, led by MacNasa Hughes, who had 17 points and two steals. Nemo Johnson tacked on a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Nate Youngblood chipped in as well with 11 points.

Saint Augustine's out-rebounded Livingstone 38-37 in Wednesday's game, led by Johnson's 10 boards.

Saint Augustine's forced 18 Livingstone turnovers. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Jordan Love's three steals led the way for Saint Augustine's.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 13-9 advantage, Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run with 13:16 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Hughes, to increase its lead to 19-9. The Falcons then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 36-21 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 36 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Saint Augustine's kept widening that lead, expanding it to 64-48 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 70-48 with 5:35 to go in the contest. The Blue Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 80-71 win. Saint Augustine's got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 16 of its 44 total points.
