Saint Augustine's wins turnover battle and takes down Livingstone 68-59

SALISBURY, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team had 13 fewer turnovers than Livingstone in a 68-59 win against the Blue Bears on the road Wednesday.

The Falcons (13-10, 7-8) had four players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. Janiya Reed tacked on 14 points and seven steals off the bench and Lauren Banks chipped in as well with 12 points and two steals.

Greene pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Saint Augustine's, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.

The Saint Augustine's defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 26 Livingstone turnovers while committing 13. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Reed's seven steals led the way individually for the Falcons.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 17-13.

Livingstone kept adding to that lead, building a 21-13 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run to narrow its deficit to 21-19. The Falcons kept the rally going and overtook the Blue Bears on a free throw from Kaley Woodruff with 00:09 left for a 30-29 halftime advantage. Saint Augustine's forced nine Livingstone turnovers in the period and turned them into 11 points.

Livingstone then took a 41-35 lead following intermission before Saint Augustine's went on an 8-0 run to grab a 43-41 lead with 1:08 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Blue Bears had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 43-42 edge. Saint Augustine's took advantage of nine Livingstone turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

Saint Augustine's kept widening that lead, expanding it to 58-53 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Reed's jumper, to grow the lead to 64-53 with 1:28 to go in the contest. The Blue Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 68-59 win. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 25 points in the paint.
