ORANGEBURG, S.C. --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team got a 20-point showing from the bench, but fell 75-61 to the Claflin Panthers on the road Saturday.
The Falcons (13-11, 7-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Joscelyn Meyers, who had 14 points. Taniyah Greene added 12 points and six rebounds and Lauren Banks chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.
Led by Keziah Soogrim's two offensive rebounds, Saint Augustine's did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.
Saint Augustine's forced 19 Claflin turnovers. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Janiya Reed's five steals led the way for Saint Augustine's.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-0, Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run with 6:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Lauren Banks, to take a 6-5 lead. The Falcons then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-9.
Claflin kept adding to that lead, building a 21-11 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Reed, to tie the game at 21. Claflin then took control, putting the Falcons at a 31-28 disadvantage heading into halftime.
Claflin continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-33 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Ashlyn Mesidor, to trim its deficit to 46-38 with 2:02 to go in the third. Claflin countered and stretched its lead to 50-40 heading into the fourth. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
Claflin kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 67-56 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 67-61 with 2:01 to go in the contest. Claflin responded and outscored the Falcons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-61.
