Saint Augustine's falls to Fayetteville State 64-57 after close finish

RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter tied 49-49 with Fayetteville State, but could not take control and fell 64-57 to the Broncos at home Saturday.

The Falcons (14-12, 8-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Lauren Banks added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Janiya Reed added five points and three steals.

Greene pulled down eight offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Saint Augustine's, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 13 second chance points.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Banks, to take an early lead with 7:50 left in the first quarter. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-10 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 15 points close to the basket.

Saint Augustine's kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 8:35 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Reed, to increase its lead to 22-13. The Broncos then battled back to even it up at 32-32 heading into halftime. Saint Augustine's saw non-starters score nine of its 17 total points off the bench in the quarter.

After intermission, Fayetteville State snatched a 35-34 lead before Saint Augustine's answered back by going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Banks, to grab a 41-35 lead with 6:38 to go in the third. The Broncos then rallied to tie it at 49-49 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fayetteville State then snagged a 58-50 advantage before Saint Augustine's responded by going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Reed's three, to shrink the deficit to 58-55 with 2:00 to go in the contest. Fayetteville State responded and outscored the Falcons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 64-57. Saint Augustine's got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring three of its eight total points.
