Saint Augustine's rallies late, but loses to Fayetteville State 72-62

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team took a 52-46 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 72-62 to the Fayetteville State Broncos on the road Saturday.

The Falcons (10-10, 4-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had 14 points. Joscelyn Meyers tacked on 12 points and Lauren Banks helped out with 10 points and two steals.

Ashlyn Mesidor pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Saint Augustine's, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into five second chance points.

The Saint Augustine's defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 20 Fayetteville State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Janiya Reed's four steals led the way individually for the Falcons.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Saint Augustine's then started off the second quarter by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Meyers, to narrow its deficit to 20-19. Fayetteville State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Falcons trailing 30-26 heading into halftime.

Fayetteville State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-28 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Greene, to grab a 37-35 lead with 6:19 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Falcons added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-46 edge. Saint Augustine's took advantage of six Fayetteville State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 13 points off of takeaways.

Fayetteville State then erased the Saint Augustine's lead in the game's final quarter for a 72-62 comeback victory. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 10 points in the paint.
