Falcons Fall 25-7 In Season Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College opened the 2009 football season with a 25-7 loss to Catawba College on Saturday (Aug. 29) at Broughton High School Stadium.

The Falcons (0-1) scored their only touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard pass from Joaquin Green (Redshirt Fr./Pittsboro, N.C.) to Richard Abney (Jr./Capital Heights, Md.). Adison Daniels (Sr./Raleigh, N.C.) booted the extra point.

Green completed 10 of 20 passes for 90 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in his first collegiate start, and Walter Sanders (Jr./Baltimore, Md.) gained 57 rushing yards for the Falcons.

Linebackers Stephan Stanback (Temple Hills, Md.) and Steven Stanback (Temple Hills, Md.) led the Falcons on defense. Stephan Stanback recorded 11 tackles and Steven Stanback finished with 8 tackles, two sacks and one quarterback hurry. Cornerback Charles McKenzie (Jr./Warner Robins, Ga.) collected 10 tackles, one interception, three pass break-ups and two quarterback hurries for the Falcons.

Transfer quarterback Cam Sexton threw for 336 yards for the Indians (1-0), who gained 424 total offensive yards. Sexton, who started eight games for the University of North Carolina last year, tossed two touchdowns and one interception on 23 of 40 passing. His favorite target was Gerron Bryant, who caught six passes for 106 yards.

Antonio Hall added 84 rushing yards for the Indians, ranked 19th in the D2football.com preseason poll. His one-yard touchdown run gave the Indians an 18-0 lead in the fourth quarter before the Falcons scored. The Indians added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons host the University of Charleston (W.Va.) on Sept. 5 at Broughton High School Stadium. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
