Lady Falcons Blank Shaw 3-0 In Volleyball Rematch

RALEIGH, N.C. - Saint Augustine's College has already won the CIAA Southern Division, but its volleyball victory over Shaw University on Wednesday was just as sweet.

The Lady Falcons downed their crosstown rival in three sets at Emery Gymnasium to remain unbeaten in the division with one match left in the regular season. The Lady Bears (3-14, 3-13 CIAA, 0-9 South) put up a challenge in the middle of the match, but the Lady Falcons (21-8 overall, 15-2 CIAA, 9-0 South) pulled away in the end to sweep the season series. The Lady Falcons topped the Lady Bears 3-0 on Sept. 23.

Kathryn Tokarski (Jr./Saskatchewan, Canada) had team-highs of 10 kills and 13 digs to offset 10 kills from Shaw's Sharetta Riggins and 13 digs from the Lady Bears' Jeneva Carner. Tokarski got support from Brittany Hicks (Soph./Louisburg, N.C./8 kills), Stephony Newkirk (Sr./Greenville, N.C./7 kills), Keisha Parris (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica/7 kills) and Nicolette Campbell (Jr./Nassau, Bahamas/9 digs). Roxanne Smith (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) also contributed for the Lady Falcons with 28 assists, eight digs and five service aces. As a team, the Lady Falcons held a huge advantage in service aces (12-2) in addition to kills (37-23).

The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first game which led to a 25-16 victory. In the second set, it was the Lady Bears who started fast, but the Lady Falcons gradually pulled even. The set stayed close to the very end until Parris' service ace gave the Lady Falcons the game at 27-25. The loss took the steam out of the Lady Bears as the Lady Falcons surged to a 14-5 lead in the third game. The Lady Falcons won the set 25-8.

The Lady Falcons finish the regular season Friday at home against Johnson C. Smith at 6 p.m. It will be the last home match for Shakira Carter (Sr./St. Michael, Barbados), Jerissa Lake (Sr./St. Croix, Virgin Islands), Courtney Mosley (Jr./Decatur, Ga.), Newkirk and Campbell.
