Saturday's effort in the win over Fayetteville State University netted four CIAA football player of the week awards for Saint Augustine's College on Monday.
Jadarius Dean (Fr./Milledgeville, Ga.) garnered the most honors. He was named offensive lineman of the week and rookie of the week. Tailback Walter Sanders (Sr./Baltimore, Md.) was chosen offensive back of the week and defensive end Anthony Harris (Jr./Raleigh, N.C.) won defensive lineman of the week.
Each player was instrumental in the 42-36 Homecoming win over the Broncos, the defending CIAA champions. Dean anchored an offensive line which helped Sanders gain a season-high 243 yards and score three touchdowns on 30 carries. Sanders, who scored on runs of 41, 70 and seven yards, rushed for the second-highest total in school history. He is 299 yards away from becoming the Falcons' first 1,000-yard rusher in the modern era.
Harris played his best game as a Falcon on defense. He recorded five tackles, two sacks, two quarterback hurries, one pass break-up and one blocked punt which he recovered. The blocked punt led to a key touchdown drive for the Falcons.
With the victory, the Falcons stay in the chase for the CIAA Southern Division title at 3-0. Their 4-1 overall mark is the team's best record since 2005. They have a key matchup against divisional leader Winston-Salem State University (4-0 CIAA, 6-0 overall) Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 6 p.m. The battle is for first place in the Southern Division.
