Saint Augustine’s College Upends WSSU 3-1 In Volleyball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Led by 19 kills and 11 digs from Kathryn Tokarski (Jr./Saskatchewan, Canada), Saint Augustine's College won the last two games to take a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA women's volleyball match Tuesday at Emery Gymnasium.

The victory pushed the Lady Falcons' record to 9-5 overall, 7-2 in the CIAA and 1-0 in the Southern Division. The Lady Rams fell to 6-8, 6-4 in the CIAA and 1-2 in the Southern Division.

With the win, Lady Falcon head coach Covance Mortimer got the better of his mentor Edric Poitier, who coached the Lady Falcons for five years. Poitier is now the graduate assistant coach for the Lady Rams under head coach Lataya Hilliard-Gray.  Mortimer was a volunteer assistant under Poitier when the Lady Falcons won four straight CIAA titles and advanced to three NCAA regionals from 2000 to 2003.

Mortimer got a strong effort from Tokarski and her teammates to hold off the Lady Rams. Stephony Newkirk (Sr./Greenville, N.C.) added 11 kills, and Roxanne Smith (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) tallied 34 assists.

Nicolette Campbell (Jr./Nassau, Bahamas) tied for game-high honors with 12 digs and Shakira Carter (Sr./St. Michael, Barbados) added 10 digs. Brittany Hicks (Soph./Louisburg, N.C.) had two solo blocks and three blocking assists.

The Lady Falcons took the first game 25-20 but the Lady Rams responded to win the second game 25-22. Both teams battled hard in the third match before the Lady Falcons prevailed 26-24. The momentum carried over in the fourth game for the Lady Falcons as they won 25-20 to end the match.

Georgette Allen, a former Saint Augustine's College player, led the Lady Rams with 12 kills. Ashley Harris added 11 kills and 12 digs while Kiara Brown collected 30 assists for the Lady Rams.

The Lady Falcons do not have time to celebrate long. They travel crosstown to visit arch-rival Shaw University on Thursday at Spaulding Gymnasium starting at 6 p.m. The Lady Rams visit Johnson C. Smith on Thursday at 6.
