Lady Falcons Top Shaw 3-0 For Fourth Straight Victory

RALEIGH, N.C. - It took only one hour for the Saint Augustine's College volleyball team to dispatch Shaw University on Thursday at the Lady Bears' Spaulding Gymnasium. The 25-15, 25-16, 25-21 score pleased Head Coach Covance Mortimer, who says the Lady Falcons played with intensity from the outset to gain their fourth consecutive win.

"It is a good feeling to win," Mortimer said. "The team played well. They gave a complete effort."

The sight of their crosstown rivals across the net was enough to fire up the Lady Falcons. Kathryn Tokarski (Jr./Saskatchewan, Canada) led the way with 15 kills, and Keisha Parris (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) added nine kills.

Stephony Newkirk (Sr./Greenville, N.C.) contributed eight kills while Roxanne Smith (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) dished out 33 assists. Shakira Carter (Sr./St. Michael, Barbados) recorded two blocks and the trio of Nicolette Campbell (Jr./Nassau, Bahamas), Brittany Hicks (So./Louisburg, N.C.) and Parris each had six digs.

The victory moved the Lady Falcons (10-5 overall, 8-2 CIAA, 3-0 Southern Division) into a first-place tie with Fayetteville State in the Southern Division with a showdown looming next Tuesday (Sept. 28) in Fayetteville, N.C. The match starts at 6 p.m.

"Not only did we beat Shaw, but we stayed tied for first place in the division," Mortimer said.

Sharetta Riggins collected eight kills, eight digs and two blocks for the Lady Bears (3-7 overall, 3-7 CIAA, 0-3 CIAA). Ashley Johnson had 17 assists, and Jeneva Carner totaled 14 digs.
