Lady Falcons Beat Lady Broncos, Gain Southern Division Lead

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Saint Augustine's College took the division lead and snapped a losing streak to Fayetteville State on same night.

The Lady Falcons got 10 kills each from Kathryn Tokarski (Jr./Saskatchewan, Canada) and Stephony Newkirk (Sr./Greenville, NC) to down Fayetteville State University 3-1 Tuesday in a CIAA volleyball battle between Southern Division leaders at Capel Arena. The victory moved the Lady Falcons to 11-5 overall, 9-2 in the CIAA, and 4-0 in the Southern Division while the Lady Broncos dropped to 8-4 overall,  8-3 in the CIAA, and 3-1 in the Southern Division.

The win also snapped a nine-match losing streak to the Lady Broncos. The last time the Lady Falcons won in the season series was October 18, 2006 in a five-game match. The Lady Falcons picked a good time to break the skid, however.

After losing the first game 25-18,  the Lady Falcons recovered to take the next three games by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-18. Led by Tokarski and Newkirk, the Lady Falcons tallied 38 kills and 12 service aces. Tokarski had four service aces along with 10 digs while Keisha Parris (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) also recorded four service aces in addition to eight kills and 10 digs for the Lady Falcons, who have won five straight matches.

Shakira Carter (Sr./St. Michael, Barbados) also stepped up for the Lady Falcons with seven kills, one solo block and four blocking assists. Roxanne Smith (Jr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 33 assists and Nicolette Campbell (Jr./Nassau, Bahamas) added nine digs.

For the Lady Broncos, Jasmine Stewart had nine kills and nine digs while Achari Mainor had 23 assists and seven digs. Ifeyinwa Nwokolo collected seven kills and Jamisha Jordan amassed 13 digs.

The Lady Falcons are back in action Wednesday. They visit Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C. starting at 6 p.m.
