Tokarski Collects 23 Kills As St. Aug Topples Shaw 3-1

Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. - Saint Augustine's College was fired up after the Dig Pink ceremonies before its crosstown volleyball match against Shaw Tuesday (Oct. 11).

No one was more charged than Kathryn Tokarski (Saskatchewan, Canada). The senior outside hitter compiled 23 kills to pace the Lady Falcons over the Lady Bears 3-1 before a capacity crowd of 625 at Emery Gym. Tokarski was three kills shy of her career-high 26 kills set against Claflin last season.

The win lifted the Lady Falcons to 3-3 in the CIAA Southern Division and 8-4 in the conference. The Lady Bears fell to 1-4 in the division and 2-9 in the CIAA.

The Lady Falcons needed the victory after a tough 3-2 loss to Winston-Salem State last week. Tokarski provided the spark after the Lady Falcons honored breast cancer survivors Iris White and Lynn Massey (who was not able to attend). Tokarski's attack percentage of .543 was the highest of any player on the court.

Victoria Davis (Soph./San Diego, Calif.) added 12 kills and six service aces while Roxanne Smith (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 38 assists for the Lady Falcons, who had more kills (51-36) and service aces (16-4) than their crosstown counterparts.

The Lady Bears, led by 15 kills from Crystal Gordon and 13 kills from Shaye Walton, were game from the outset. They pushed the Lady Falcons to the limit before the Lady Falcons pulled out a 25-20 first-set win.

The second set was all Lady Falcons, however, as they won 25-13. The Lady Bears (3-20 overall) took the third set 25-16. The loss awakened the Lady Falcons as they ran away with the fourth-set 25-13 for the victory.

The Lady Falcons (8-13 overall) have three straight road matches coming up, starting with a Friday (Oct. 14) date at Mount Olive. The match starts at 7 p.m.
