Saint Augustine's College opens pool play Friday (Nov. 4) with three matches on the first day of the 2011 CIAA Volleyball Tournament in Hampton, Va.
The Lady Falcons face Elizabeth City State University at 9 a.m. They later tangle with Southern Division champ Fayetteville State University at 3 p.m. and Virginia State University at 5 p.m. The site of the tournament is the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
The Lady Falcons are one of eight teams in the tournament. They are in pool B, which includes Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University and Virginia State University. Pool A consists of Winston-Salem State, Northern Division champ Chowan University, Livingstone College and Virginia Union University. Chowan is the two-time defending champion.
The Lady Falcons need to finish no lower than second to reach Saturday's semifinals, which start at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The top two teams in pool A and pool B advance to the semifinals. The championship match is Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Falcons finished the regular season 13-16 overall including an 11-5 CIAA mark. They were 6-4 in the Southern Division to earn the division's No. 3 seed.
Led by first-year head coach Nikki Bynum, the Lady Falcons are on a roll, having won their last four matches. The leaders of the team are outside hitter
Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada), rightside hitter
Keisha Parris (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) and setter
Roxanne Smith (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica). All three players were named All-CIAA Wednesday.
