HAMPTON, Va. – Saint Augustine's College is headed to Saturday's CIAA Volleyball Tournament semifinals to face division rival Winston-Salem State. The match takes place at the Boo Williams Sportsplex at 5 p.m.
The Lady Falcons advanced on a tiebreaker Friday (Nov. 4) after the first day of pool play. They tied Southern Division champ Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State at 2-1 in pool B.
Fayetteville State qualified for the semifinals as the No. 1 seed and St. Aug as the No. 2 seed based on the total number of set wins in their pool. The Lady Broncos were first with eight victories and the Lady Falcons were second with seven.
The Lady Falcons defeated Virginia State and Elizabeth City State with their only loss coming against Fayetteville State. All-CIAA players
Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada) and
Keisha Parris (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) sparked the Lady Falcons in each match.
Tokarski tallied 12 kills and 15 digs while Parris added nine kills, nine digs and three blocks in a 3-0 win over Virginia State in their last match of the day.
Victoria Davis (Soph./San Diego, Calif.) also had a big match, recording 12 kills and three blocks. All-CIAA setter
Roxanne Smith (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) recorded 33 assists and
Brittany Hicks (Jr./Louisburg, N.C.) had 10 digs for the Lady Falcons, who won 25-19, 25-13, 25-19.
Against Fayetteville State, Parris amassed a match-high 20 kills and four solo blocks while Tokarski added 13 kills and 16 digs for the Lady Falcons, who lost 3-1. Smith finished with 35 assists for the Lady Falcons, who were defeated by a score of 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23.
The Lady Falcons knocked off Elizabeth City State 3-0 earlier Friday morning. Tokarski led the way with 12 kills and 10 digs, and Parris added 10 kills and 10 digs. Smith had 27 assists and Hicks contributed eight kills and 10 digs. Davis finished with five blocks for the Lady Falcons, who won 25-23, 25-17, 25-10.
After the tournament's first day, the Lady Falcons are now 15-17 overall. They entered the tourney as the Southern Division No. 3 seed.
