TURLOCK, Calif. - Saint Augustine's College finished fifth in the men's events and tied for 15th in the women's events on a cold and wet Saturday at the 2011 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at California State Stanislaus. The meet ended around 1 a.m. eastern standard time.
The Falcons, who entered the three-day meet as the defending national men's champions, scored 41 points while Abilene Christian won the men's title with 68 points. Either Saint Augustine's College or Abilene Christian has taken the men's championship since 1982. The Falcons have won a combined 31 NCAA men's and women's indoor and outdoor championships.
Adams State was second with 55 points and Lincoln (Mo.) was third with 51 points followed by Emporia State with 43 points. Johnson C. Smith tied Western State for sixth with 37 points. In the women's standings, the Lady Falcons scored 17 points. Grand Valley State scored 82.5 points for its first women's outdoor crown. Lincoln (Mo.) was second with 68 points and Adams State was third with 51 points. Johnson C. Smith placed fourth with 36 points.
Several Falcons and Lady Falcons earned All-America honors. In the men's 110 meters, Gerkenz Senesca (Roselle, N.J.) placed fourth in 14.17 seconds while top-seed Jason Boyd finished eighth in 14.50. In the men' 400 meters, Josh Edmonds (Fr./Washington, D.C.) was fifth in 47.56 and Kelly Fisher (Jr./Tinton Falls, N.J.) placed seventh in 48.03.
In the men's 100 meters, Ramon Gittens (Sr./St. Thomas, Barbados) was fourth in 10.36. In the men's 200 meters, Gittens was fourth in 21.03 and Edmonds was seventh in 21.32. In the men's triple jump, Orolando Duffus (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) leaped 48 feet, 3 ½ inches to place eighth. In the men's 4x400 relay, the top-seeded group of Fisher, Edmonds, Boyd and Antonio Abney (Palmyra, N.J.) finished second in 3:08.95.
In the women's 400 meters, Kelly Shaw (Soph./Winona, Minn.) was third in 54.65 and Nicketa Bernard (Soph./Westmoreland, Jamaica) placed seventh in 57.08. In the women's 4x100 relay, the Lady Falcon foursome of Jaivairia Bacote, Bernard, Sheena Johns (Sr./Greenwood, Del.) and Shaw finished sixth in 46.32. In the women's 4x400 relay, the quartet of Bernard, Johns, April London (Jr./Hampstead, N.C.) and Shaw finished third in 3:43:42.
