SAU to Graduate 10 Track & Field Seniors in Preparation for CIAA Championship

RALEIGH, NC—As the intensity mounts for the 2024 CIAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Durham, Saint Augustine's University (SAU) proudly announces that ten graduating seniors from the men's and women's track and field teams will embody the essence of dedication and commitment as they cross the commencement stage before showcasing their athletic prowess on the field.

"We are immensely proud of these student-athletes for their exceptional commitment both on the field and in the classroom," said SAU Interim President Dr. Marcus H. Burgess. "Their dedication and achievements are a testament to the values of perseverance and excellence that Saint Augustine's University instills in its students."

SAU's Men's Outdoor Track & Field team has showcased remarkable performance throughout the season, securing top positions across various events. The team excelled in the rankings, boasting top 5 positions in 10 events, top 10 in 13 events, and claiming 1st place in 5 events. Their exceptional skills have earned them qualifications for the NCAA Division II Championship in 6 events.

Eight outstanding members of the men's team will stride proudly across the commencement stage before heading to Durham for the CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Among them, 2023 CIAA Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year Sean Kalawan (Westmoreland, Jamaica) stood out with impressive 2024 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field achievements, ranking 3rd in 110H, 1st in 400H, and 1st in 4x400, all while graduating Magna Cum Laude. Accompanying him are talented athletes like Darius Turner (Burlington, NC), Isaiah Chapman (Raleigh, NC), Brenton Chapple (Baltimore, MD), Isaiah Rozier (Raeford, NC), Skyy Lawrence (Raleigh, NC), Kadain Roper (Portland, Jamaica), and Jarvis Dudley (Fayetteville, NC), who have demonstrated unparalleled dedication to academics and athletics.

On the women's front, SAU's Women's Outdoor Track & Field team has displayed exceptional prowess, securing top positions in 9 events and top 10 in 15 events. Their hard work paid off with 1st place finishes in 3 events and qualifications for the NCAA Division II Championship in 5 events.

Two remarkable members of the women's team will also be honored at the commencement ceremony before heading to the CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Durham. Kyrasani Mitchell (San Diego, CA), known for her prowess in Shot Put and Discus, will graduate Magna Cum Laude alongside Courtney Brown, a skilled athlete excelling in Javelin.

The graduation ceremony will be a poignant moment of recognition for these ten talented athletes before they transition from students to competitors, exemplifying the spirit of excellence and determination that defines the SAU family. 

Led by 2023 CIAA Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year Malaysia Johnson (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and two-time CIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and NCAA Division II Men's Indoor 60M Champion Terrell Robinson (Winston-Salem, NC), the Falcons look to improve their 2023 performances of second place in the CIAA Men's Outdoor Championship and third place in the CIAA Women's Outdoor Championship by competing for their 41st CIAA Men's Outdoor Championship and 24th CIAA Women's Outdoor Championship. 

The Falcons boast CIAA first-place leaders in the following Outdoor Track & Field events:

Men:

100M: Terrell Robinson, Jr. - 10.28
400H: Sean Kalawan - 51.50
4x100: Darius Turner, Terrell Robinson, Jr., Isaiah Chapman , and Amarion Harrell - 40.67
4x400: Ha'Mir Hampton (Mebane, NC), Sean Kalawan, Shawn Walls (Durham, NC) and Amarion Harrell - 3:09.12 
Decathlon: Kahlil West (Roanoke, VA) - 5500 points

Women:

400M: Malaysia Johnson - 54.74
400H: Christabelle Obi (Ypsilanti, MI)- 1:02.08
4x400: Simone Kelly (Philadelphia, PA), Asheika Smith (St. Elizabeth, JAM), Cache Miller (Tampa, FL), and Malaysia Johnson - 3:42.93

SAU alums Bershawn "Batman" Jackson and Elizabeth Gary are seeking their first CIAA Outdoor Championships as head coaches.
