HAMPTON, Va. - Saint Augustine's College served up 3-0 victories over Lincoln (Pa.) University and Virginia State University Friday (Sept. 16) on the first day of the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up at Boo Williams Sportsplex. The wins were the first in the college coaching career of new St. Aug head coach Nikki Bynum.
The Lady Falcons combined for 32 service aces in the two wins, including 22 against Lincoln (Pa.). Senior
Roxanne Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) accounted for 11 service aces for the Lady Falcons, who open CIAA play at 2-0. Senior
Keisha Parris (St. Catherine, Jamaica) added eight service aces as the duo combined for all but three Lady Falcons' aces.The serves pushed the Lady Falcons to a 25-14, 25-6, 25-12 win over Lincoln (Pa.).
Smith also was adept at setting up her teammates. She had 27 assists which allowed the Lady Falcons to hold a 29-13 edge in kills and hit .292 as a team. Senior
Brittany Hicks (Louisburg, N.C.) led the Lady Falcons with nine kills and senior
Kathryn Tokarski (Saskatchewan, Canada) added eight kills and nine digs. Parris finished with a game-high 10 digs.
The Lady Falcons served 10 aces in the second match against Virginia State. Smith once again led the way with four service aces to go along with 35 assists and five kills. Both Hicks and Parris added two aces for the Lady Falcons, who won a close match 26-24, 25-20, 26-24.
Hicks sparked the Lady Falcons with 12 kills while Parris and Tokarski added 10 kills each. Parris also collected 10 digs and Hicks had nine. The service aces and kills decided the match for the Lady Falcons, who held a 43-29 kill advantage. Virginia State ended the match with five service aces.
The Lady Falcons (2-6 overall) continue play in the Round-Up on Saturday (Sept. 17). They face Virginia Union at 11 a.m. and Bowie State at 3 p.m.
