HAMPTON, Va. - Saint Augustine's College established itself as a league volleyball contender after an impressive showing this past weekend (Sept. 16-18) at the CIAA Round-Up.
The Lady Falcons won five of six matches including a 3-2 victory over Elizabeth City State on Sunday. Playing on little rest after the ECSU win, the Lady Falcons suffered their only loss in their last match of the day, a 3-0 defeat to two-time defending champion Chowan. The meeting was a rematch of last year's CIAA Tournament title contest at the same site, the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
The Lady Falclons are the defending Southern Division champs and it appears they will contend for the crown again this season. They dropped only five sets in six matches against Northern Division opponents at the Round-Up including three against Chowan.
Against ECSU, the Lady Falcons lost the first two sets but regrouped to take the next three for the win. Both
Kathryn Tokarski (Saskatchewan, Canada) and Kiesha Parris (St. Catherine, Jamaica) led the way with 19 kills apiece.
Victoria Davis (San Diego, Calif.) added eight kills and
Roxanne Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) had six kills, 42 assists and 11 digs.
Brittany Hicks (Louisburg, N.C.) chipped in three service aces, eight digs and two blocking assists.
Parris led the team with 16 digs followed by Tokarski with 14. Davis recorded 10 digs.
The Lady Falcons faced Chowan minutes after their thrilling win over ECSU. Playing on tired legs, the Lady Falcons lost the first set 25-7. They fared better in the following sets, losing 25-23 and 25-16.
Parris led the Lady Falcons with 13 kills and 12 digs. Tokarski added eight kills and 11 digs while Smith had 25 assists and eight digs.
Akilah McCall (Hagerstown, Md.) also had eight digs for the Lady Falcons, who are 5-7 overall.
The Lady Falcons host Johnson C. Smith in their home opener Wednesday (Sept. 21) at Emery Gymnasium. Match time is 6 p.m.
