WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College gave a valiant effort, but the visiting Lady Falcons fell to Winston-Salem State 3-0 Friday (Sept. 23) in a CIAA Southern Division volleyball matchup at the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Lady Falcons (1-1 Southern Division, 6-2 CIAA, 6-8 overall) stayed close with the Lady Rams in each game. In the first set, the Lady Falcons scored four straight points to pull within 23-22. Kathryn Tokarski (Sr./Saskatchewan, Canada) and Abeje Carrington (Jr./St. George, Barbados) combined on a block to cap the rally. The Lady Rams (1-1 Southern Division, 5-3 CIAA, 5-8 overall) held on 25-23, however, to win the game.
In the second set, the Lady Rams pulled away from a 13-13 tie to win 25-19. In the third set, the Lady Falcons were one point away from getting their first win. They led 24-22 but the Lady Rams rallied for a 28-26 victory to clinch the match.
Brittany Hicks (Jr./Louisburg, N.C.) led the Lady Falcons with nine kills and three solo blocks followed by Tokarski and CIAA player of the week Keisha Parris (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) with seven kills apiece. Tokarski added 11 digs and Roxanne Smith (Sr./St. Catherine, Jamaica) had 26 assists. The Lady Rams were led by Avoni Seymour with 13 kills and Kiara Brown with 30 assists. Brittany Rich added five kills, five service aces and 10 digs.
The Lady Falcons, the defending Southern Division champs, are guided by first-year Head Coach Nikki Bynum. The Lady Rams are directed by former St. Aug Head Coach and graduate Edric Poitier, who led the Lady Falcons to four consecutive CIAA titles from 2000 to 2003.
The Lady Falcons are back in action Saturday (Sept. 24) against Wingate in Winston-Salem, N.C. The match starts at 2 p.m.
