Brittany Hicks (Sr./Louisburg, N.C.) finished with 16 kills and
Victoria Davis (Jr./San Diego, Calif.) added 11 kills and 16 digs for Saint Augustine's University in a tough five-set volleyball loss to crosstown rival Shaw University at Spaulding Gymnasium on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012.
Davis added four service aces, two solo blocks and four blocking assists in an all-around performance for the Lady Falcons, who were one point away from victory. But the Lady Bears rallied from a 14-9 deficit in the fifth set to take the match at 19-17.
Julieesa Thomas (Fr./St. Croix, US VI) had 42 assists while
Jamie Goff (Jr./Rubonia, Fla.) totaled nine kills and 10 digs for the Lady Falcons (4-15, 4-7 CIAA, 1-4 Southern Division).
Chelsea Farrior (So./Tampa, Fla.) totaled 12 digs and
Cierra Neal (So./New Hill, N.C.) contributed 11 digs. Shaye Walton and Crystal Gordon led the Lady Bears (8-10, 4-7 CIAA, 2-3 Southern Division) with 13 kills each and Sashane Watson chipped in 11 kills and 20 digs. Courtney Kelly had 35 assists for the Lady Bears.
The match was played in a packed gym which included the Shaw cheerleaders and pep band, the St. Aug women's basketball team and several members of the Falcons' football team. The spirited atmosphere spurred the Lady Bears to a 25-21 victory in the first set. The Lady Falcons, led by the trio of Hicks, Davis, and Goff, rebounded to take the next two sets 25-14 and 25-21. The Lady Bears won the fourth set 25-19 to set up a wild finish.
The Lady Falcons held leads of 8-2 and 14-9 in the fifth set before the Lady Bears started their comeback. The Lady Bears scored five consecutive points to tie the score at 14. The Lady Falcons led briefly 17-16 on a kill by Thomas, but the Lady Bears scored the final three points for the win.
The Lady Falcons return to action Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at home against Johnson C. Smith University. The match starts at 6 p.m. in Emery Gymnasium.
