Brittany Hicks (Sr./Louisburg, N.C.) tallied 17 kills and
Jamie Goff (Jr./Rubonia, Fla.) added 15 kills as Saint Augustine's University pulled out a thrilling five-set volleyball victory over CIAA Southern Division foe Winston-Salem State University on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 at the C.E. Gaines Center.
The 31-29, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 15-11 win was the fourth straight for the Lady Falcons (4-6 overall), who remained unbeaten in the conference at 4-0. They kept the Lady Rams winless at 0-14 and 0-5 in the league. This was the Southern Division season opener for the Lady Rams.
Juliseea Thomas (Fr./St. Croix, US VI), the CIAA rookie of the week, added 36 assists and 12 digs while
Chelsea Farrior (So./Tampa, Fla.) had 14 digs. Both
Victoria Davis (Jr./San Diego, Calif.) and
Na'Chanelle Brown (Fr./Columbia, S.C.) had five blocking assists, and Davis added seven kills. Hicks finished with three blocking assists, and Goff added eight digs. For the Lady Rams, De Ann Smith had 17 kills and Francesca Edgerton added 10 kills. Kayla Brass collected 23 assists and Avoni Seymour had 12 digs.
The Lady Falcons took a 2-0 lead but both sets were close. The tied turned in the third and fourth sets in favor of the Lady Rams. In the fifth set, the Lady Falcons held a slim 11-10 lead, but outscored the Lady Rams 4-1 to get the win. Hicks had two kills during the final run.
The Lady Falcons return to action in the JCSU Tournament this weekend hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. They face Johnson C. Smith at 11 a.m. and Armstrong Atlantic State at 7 p.m. on Friday and USC Aiken at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
