St. Aug Downs Livingstone 21-14 on Homecoming Day

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - A.J. Gilford (R-Fr./Savannah, Ga.) tossed two touchdown passes to Brian Richards (R-Sr./Waldorf, Md.) and ran for another to lead Saint Augustine's University to a 21-14 CIAA football victory over Livingstone College at SAU Stadium on campus on Homecoming Day (Saturday, October 12, 2013).

The Falcons upped their record to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA Southern Division. The victory sets up a key game against nationally-ranked and two-time defending league champion Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, October 19, 2013, in Raleigh, N.C., at 1:30 p.m. The Rams and Falcons were predicted to finish among the top two teams in the division.

The Falcons are currently tied for second in the division with Fayetteville State University. The Rams are first at 3-0.

"Next week is a big, big game!," St. Aug Head Coach Michael Costa said. "We need to make sure we play our best game."

Gilford completed 11 of 16 pass attempts for 122 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Richards caught five passes for 66 yards and Roderick Davenport (R-Soph./Orangeburg, S.C.) gained a season-high 106 yards on 18 carries.

Gilford threw touchdown passes of 16 and 28 yards to Richards and rushed for a six-yard touchdown in the first half. His second scoring throw and a two-point conversion pass to Davenport gave the Falcons a 21-7 halftime lead.

It was all the points the Falcons needed. The Blue Bears gained over 400 offensive yards but the Falcons held when it mattered. The Blue Bears reached the red zone five times but scored only once on a four-yard pass from Drew Powell to Jalen Hendricks. The score pulled the Blue Bears within 21-14 in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Bears scored on a 23-yard pass from Powell to Hendricks with under two minutes left, but a holding call nullified the play. Shonquez Nelson (Sr./Lake City, S.C.) of the Falcons sacked Powell on the following play. Needing 26 yards for a first down, Powell threw two incomplete passes which ended the Blue Bears' final scoring threat with 56 seconds left.

Nelson's sack was one of seven against the Livingstone quarterback. Nelson led the Falcons with two sacks and Christopher Roberts (R-Soph./Albany, Ga.), Javarous Faulk (Sr./Macon, Ga.), Joshua Manners (Fr./Suwannee, Ga.), each had a sack.

Nelson also picked off a pass at the line of scrimmage and rambled 27 yards to set up Gilford's short scoring run for a 6-0 first-quarter lead. Kenneth White gave the Blue Bears a brief 7-6 lead with a 46-yard run off a fake punt in the second quarter. The Falcons responded on the ensuing drive with Gilford's 16-yard scoring throw to Richards. Alexander Tucker (Sr./Union, S.C.) added the extra point for a 13-7 lead.

Gilford connected with Richards gain for a 28-yard touchdown with 53 seconds left in the second quarter. Gilford found a wide-open Davenport in the end zone for the two-point conversion to give the Falcons a 21-7 lead at the break. The only scoring in the second half was Powell's touchdown pass to Hendricks in the fourth quarter.

Chaz Robinson (Sr./Hampton, Va.) of the Falcons totaled a game-high 12 tackles. He is three tackles shy of becoming the school career tackles leader. His teammates Carlton Butts (Jr./Thomasville, Ga.), Dezmon Hopkins (Fr./Manassas, Va.) and Nelson each added seven tackles and Dominique Marsh (Jr./Norfolk, Va.) intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart a Livingstone scoring drive. White lead the Blue Bears with 10 tackles.

The Falcons remained unbeaten on campus with the victory. They are 4-0 at SAU Stadium including a 3-0 record in Homecoming games.
