Skyla Isidore (Jr./Morne Castries, St. Lucia) led Saint Augustine's University with 12 kills in a three-set CIAA volleyball victory (25-14, 25-19, 25-9) over crosstown rival Shaw University on Dig Pink Night at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, October 24, 2013.
Victoria Davis (Sr./San Diego, Calif.) added nine kills while
Meghan Mahon (Fr./Houston, Texas) and Julieesa Thomas (Soph./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) had 15 and 14 assists, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, who maintained their hold on third place in the Southern Division.
Kayla Cason (Fr./Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with 21 digs and four service aces and
Chelsea Farrior (Jr./Tampa, Fla.) added 10 digs for the Lady Falcons (8-11, 8-6 CIAA, 5-3 Southern Division), who also got three service aces apiece from Mahon and
Jamie Goff (Sr./Tampa, Fla.). Goff also chipped in four kills and four digs.
Sashane Watson led Shaw (1-19, 0-13 CIAA, 0-8 Southern Division) with six kills and Michelle Oliver had 10 assists. Deja Simpson contributed seven digs for the Lady Bears.
The Lady Falcons outshot the Lady Bears .221 to -.045 and held an 11-2 edge in service aces. They also produced more digs (47-32) which led to a three-set sweep.
The Lady Falcons asserted themselves early in the first set, taking an 11-7 lead on Goff's kill. The lead stretched to 18-12 on blocking assists by
Temperance Jacobs (Fr./McDonough, Ga.) and Davis. Leading 19-14, the Lady Falcons scored the final six points, mainly off Shaw attack errors, to finished off the Lady Bears 25-14.
The Lady Falcons started slowly in the second set, trailing 14-12 before picking up steam. Led by Isidore and Davis, the Lady Falcons surged ahead 20-16 on their way to a 25-19 win.
Between the second and third sets, the Lady Falcons honored seven women during a 10-minute intermission about breast cancer awareness. The women were Rachel Cozart, Brenda Edwards, Ophelia Jackson, Sharon Sykes, Dorothy Porter, Emmy Shackelford and Iris White.

Bruce Cozart. Sykes is the mother of Davis, a middle blocker, and Emmy Shackelford is the grandmother of softball player Michelle Shackelford (Sr./Laurel, Md.). When play resumed in the third set, the Lady Falcons wasted little time putting away the Lady Bears. They scored 10 straight points capped by Goff's kill off an assist by Mahon to turn a 4-4 tie into a 14-4 lead. The Lady Falcons won the set 25-9 for the victory on two straight service aces from Goff.
The Lady Falcons play again on Saturday, October 26, 2013, in the Francis Marion Tri-Match in Florence, S.C. They face the University of South Carolina-Aiken at 3 p.m. and host Francis Marion University at 5 p.m.
