St. Aug Volleyball Season Ends at CIAA Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Victoria Davis (Sr./San Diego, CA) combined for 44 kills in three matches, but the Saint Augustine's University season ended in the double-elimination pool play round of the CIAA Volleyball Tournament at Whitaker Gym on Sunday, November 10, 2013. The Lady Falcons didn't go down easily, however.

The Lady Falcons, seeded third in the Southern Division, played Northern Division second-seed Chowan University tough in two losses. Sandwiched between the defeats was an easy victory over Virginia Union University which eliminated the Lady Panthers, seeded fourth in the Northern Division.

In the opening match, Davis led the Lady Falcons with 18 kills and 13 digs in a four-set loss to Chowan. The Lady Falcons lost the first set 20-25 but rebounded with a 26-24 win in the second set to tie the match. The Hawks took the last two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-17 to send the Lady Falcons to the elimination bracket.

Skyla Isidore (Jr./Morne Castries, St. Lucia) added 10 kills and eight digs and Julieesa Thomas (Soph./St. Croix, US VI) had 33 assists. Kayla Cason (Fr./Virginia Beach, VA) finished with 15 digs and Olivia Porter (Fr./Bakersfield, CA) had 10 digs. Brooke Morris (Fr./Norwalk, CT) and Temperance Jacobs (Sr./McDonough, GA) each had two solo blocks and two blocking assists.

For Chowan, Brianna Smith totaled 14 kills and Melanie Chaussee collected 13 kills. Suraya Chase finished with 10 kills and Allison Smith dished out 34 assists while Cindy Ehrich had 18 digs.

In the second match, Isidore tallied 10 kills and Davis added eight kills in a three-set victory over the Lady Panthers. The first match was tight with the Lady Falcons prevailing 25-23. The Lady Falcons made quick work of the Lady Panthers in the second set 25-13 before pulling out a close 25-22 win in the third set.

Thomas had 21 assists and nine digs while Cason led the Lady Falcons with 16 digs. Kristin Madison led the Lady Panthers (7-15 overall) with nine kills.

The victory set up a rematch with Chowan with the winner heading to the semifinal round Saturday (Nov. 16) at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The first two sets were tight but the Hawks prevailed both times, winning 25-21 and 25-22. The Lady Falcons extended the match after winning the third set 25-17, but the Hawks (18-8 overall) won the fourth set 25-18 to reach the semifinal round.

Davis led all players with 18 kills and Isidore added nine kills and five blocking assists for the Lady Falcons (10-19 overall). Thomas had 29 assists and 12 digs and Cason amassed 23 digs. Morris finished with four blocking assists and Jacobs had three blocking assists. Brianna Smith led Chowan with 10 kills and Allison Smith had 30 assists. Cindy Ehrich totaled 19 digs.

The loss ended the college careers of Davis and Jacobs. Davis, who averaged four kills Sunday, was a key player under Head Coach Nikki Bynum Bumpass. Second on the team in kills this season, Davis helped the Lady Falcons win the CIAA title in 2011.

Jacobs, playing volleyball in her first and only season, provided good depth on the front line during the season. She totaled two solo blocks and six blocking assists in three matches Sunday and closed out her career tied for second on the team in blocks.

The Lady Falcons, who were 9-7 in the CIAA and 6-4 in the Southern Division, returns everyone else for next season including key freshmen Cason, Porter, Morris and Meghan Mahon (Houston, TX).
