Box Score DURHAM, N.C. - Linebacker
Chaz Robinson (Sr./Hampton, VA) of Saint Augustine's University broke a school record and defensive tackle
Shonquez Nelson (Sr./Lake City, SC) of the Falcons tied a school mark in a 32-14 CIAA football loss to Shaw University in the regular-season finale at Durham County Stadium on Saturday, November 9, 2013.
Robinson compiled 13 tackles to finish with 126 tackles for the season, setting a new St. Aug single-season tackles record. He surpassed the old mark of 125 tackles set by former standout linebacker Tyrone Pettaway in 2004. Robinson, who became the school career tackles leader earlier in the season, finished his spectacular four-year career with 407 tackles. He is the first St. Aug player to amass over 400 tackles in a career.
Nelson recorded two sacks to tie the St. Aug single-season sacks mark. He joins former star Alex Hall (2006) and current teammate
Javarous Faulk (Sr./Macon, GA) (2012) as the only Falcons to tally 13 sacks in one season. Nelson, the NCAA Division II sacks leader entering Saturday, ended his career with 25 sacks, falling one short of the school career sacks record. He recorded a sack in the second half which would have broken the single-season record and tied the career mark but a penalty on Shaw nullified the play.
In addition to his 13 tackles, Robinson also blocked a punt in the game. Nelson finished the contest with nine tackles including two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss. Defensive end Chris Roberts (R-Soph./Albany, GA) recorded 11 tackles including two sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble. Safety
Brandon Taylor (Fr./Opelika, AL) had seven tackles including two tackles for loss. Overall, the Falcons had four sacks and 12 tackles for loss against the Bears.
Both Robinson and Nelson led a St. Aug defense which kept the contest close in the first half. The Falcons trailed 9-7 at halftime but Shaw outscored the visitors 23-7 in the second half.
Jermaine Jones (R-Sr./Wilmington, NC) scored on an 80-yard kickoff return and
Alexander Tucker (Sr./Union, SC) kicked the extra point for the Falcons' only second-half points. The kickoff return and extra point pulled the Falcons within 16-14 in the third quarter, but Shaw reeled off 16 consecutive points between the third and fourth quarters.
The key play was a safety in the fourth quarter which gave the Bears a 25-14 lead. The Falcons punted after the safety, and the Bears scored a touchdown and extra point on the ensuing drive for the final margin.
The Falcons ended the season 4-6 overall including a 3-4 CIAA mark. The Bears improved to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the CIAA.
Marquise Grizzle paced the Bears with 30 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown in addition to six receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown. Trevius Folston completed 19 of 32 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns and Ta'Jaun Brown caught six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns for the Bears, who gained 511 offensive yards compared to 198 for the Falcons. On defense, Darius Moffett led the Bears with six tackles. NCAA interceptions leader Darnell Evans was credited with one of two Shaw interceptions.
The Bears led 9-0 in the first quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Folston to Brown and a 20-yard field goal by Andres Magallon. The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 16-yard scoring pass from
Cyril Davis (R-Fr./Orangeburg, SC) to
Jordan Turkvant (R-So./Orangeburg, SC). Tucker kicked the extra point to close the Falcons within 9-7 at halftime.
Grizzle scored on a six-yard run for a 16-7 Bears lead, but Jones scored on the ensuing kickoff return to slice the margin to 16-14 in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, Grizzle caught a short pass from Folston and scored from 55 yards out to push the Bears' lead to 23-14. A safety and 15-yard pass from Folston to Brown in the fourth quarter closed out the scoring.
