Robinson Stars on Defense In St. Aug Loss

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. - Linebacker Chaz Robinson (Sr./Hampton, Va.) had another big day on defense for Saint Augustine's University in a 24-3 defeat to Wingate University in a non-conference football game at Irwin Belk Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

Robinson was all over the field for the second straight game, leading both teams with 15 total tackles. Three days ago, he was named D2football.com national defensive player of the year after compiling a career-high 19 tackles last Saturday which led all Division II players.

Robinson was the biggest bright spot for the Falcons, who led 3-0 in the first quarter when Michael Lima (Jr./Miami, Fla.) booted a 28-yard field goal. Wingate responded with 24 consecutive points, including 14 points in the second half to pull away from a 10-3 halftime lead.

The turning point was an interception by Wingate in the fourth quarter. Trailing 17-3, the Falcons threatened to score when the Bulldogs picked off a pass near their end zone. It was returned all the way to Falcons' seven-yard line, and the Bulldogs scored two plays later for the final 21-point margin.

The difference in the game was red zone scoring. Wingate was 4-for-4 in the red zone including three touchdowns while the Falcons were 1-for-3. Wide receivers Brian Richards (R-Sr./Waldorf, Md.) Jermaine Jones (R-Sr./Wilmington, N.C.) stood out offensively for the Falcons. Richards led the Falcons with seven receptions for 63 yards and Jones caught six passes for 65 yards. Wideout Herman Reaves (R-Jr./Miami, Fla.) also had a good day, catching five passes for 49 yards.

Led by Robinson, the defense held Wingate to 253 total offensive yards including 50 yards on the ground. The trio of linebacker Elijah Evans (R-So./College Park, Ga.), defensive tackle Shonquez Nelson (Sr./Lake City, S.C.) and linebacker Carlton Butts (Jr./Thomasville, Ga.) each had seven tackles with Nelson totaling three tackles for loss for the Falcons (0-2).

For Wingate, quarterback Robbie Nallenweg completed 23 of 30 pass attempts for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Eric Mapoles had 11 tackles for the Bulldogs (1-0).

The Falcons host Stillman College in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 21. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
