Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Olivia Porter (So./Bakersfield, CA) recorded a career-high 21 kills and added 13 digs and three service aces while Akera McPhaul (Fr./Greensboro, NC) added a career-high 12 kills and three blocks to push Saint Augustine's University past Elizabeth City State University 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22, 15-11) in a non-conference volleyball match between CIAA teams at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, October 16, 2014.
Juliseea Thomas (Jr./St. Croix, US VI) contributed eight kills, 29 assists, 22 kills and three service aces while Meghan Mahon (So./Houston, TX) finished with 18 assists for the Lady Falcons (7-13 overall). Marley Parker (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) chipped in 14 digs.
The Lady Vikings (7-14 overall) were sparked by 29 kills and 10 digs from Rosetta Becerra and 20 kills, 11 digs and four service aces from Kelsey Smith. Krystal Sawyer added 49 assists and 10 digs and Tracie Twine had 18 digs. Smith and Emmesha White registered five and four blocks, respectively, and White added six service aces.
Led by three kills each from Porter and McPhaul, the Lady Falcons led 19-16 in the first set but the Lady Vikings went on a 9-1 run to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Falcons came back to win the second set by two points behind five kills from McPhaul and four kills from Dionna Hopkins (Jr./St. Croix, US VI), who recorded a kill to tie the score at 24-24 to prevent the Lady Falcons from being two sets down.
The Lady Vikings won the third set by another close score after the Lady Falcons led 24-19. Once again, the Lady Falcons showed their resiliency by taking the fourth set by three points to tie the match. Porter led the way in that set with five kills.
In the fifth set, the Lady Falcons trailed 9-8, but outscored the Lady Vikings 7-2 to win the match. The Lady Vikings pulled within 13-11, but a kill by Porter and an ace by Mikayla Pettyjohn (Fr./Jamestown, NC) finished off the Lady Vikings. The victory avenged a five-set loss to the Lady Vikings in September during the CIAA Round-Up I.
The Lady Falcons return to CIAA Southern Division action on Monday when they host Winston-Salem State University on Dig Pink Night. The match begins at 6 p.m.
