Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. –
Olivia Porter (So./Bakersfield, CA) recorded a match-high 13 kills and 14 digs as Saint Augustine's University topped crosstown rival Shaw University in three sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-22) at Spaulding Gymnasium for its second straight victory on Thursday, October 9, 2014.
Akera McPhaul (Fr./Greensboro, NC) added eight kills and
Meghan Mahon (So./Houston, TX) registered 18 assists for the Lady Falcons (2-3 Southern Division, 5-6 CIAA, 5-11 overall), who are tied for third place with Johnson C. Smith University and Livingstone College as they enter the second half of their Southern Division schedule. The top four Northern Division and Southern Division teams will advance to the CIAA Tournament in November 2014.
Juliseea Thomas (Jr./St. Croix, US VI) finished with 10 assists and 12 digs, and
Marley Parker (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) had 11 digs for the Lady Falcons, who held a .106 to -.020 attack advantage.
Mikayla Pettyjohn (Fr./Jamestown, NC) and
Danyelle Noland (Fr./Nashville, NC) had two blocks apiece.
The trio of Briana Wilson, Deja Simpson and Ladazia Burris each collected five kills for the Lady Bears (0-5 Southern Division, 0-11 CIAA, 0-13 overall). Courtnie Cook had 15 assists and Simpson added 13 digs while Tiffany Brooks totaled 12 digs. Shymaria Broadway finished with three blocks.
The Lady Falcons and the Lady Bears fed off the energy from fans of both teams inside the packed gymnasium, but the Lady Falcons simply had more firepower. The score was tied 15-15 in the first set but the Lady Falcons went on a 10-1 run to claim the first match. Porter led the Lady Falcons with three kills during the spurt.
Sparked by four kills from Porter, the Lady Falcons pulled away early in the second set. They led 19-10 on their way to a nine-point win to take the second set.
The third set was a thriller. The Lady Falcons led 16-10, but the Lady Bears scored seven straight points to take a 17-16 lead. With the score tied 21-21, the Lady Falcons outscored the Lady Bears 4-1 to win the first of two scheduled matches between the rivals this season. Thomas had two kills and Pettyjohn ended the set with the match-winning kill.
Both teams meet for the second time on Friday, November 7, 2014, at Emery Gymnasium on Senior Night for the Lady Falcons at 6 p.m. The Lady Falcons will play again on Saturday, October 11, in at tri-match held at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. They will play Bluefield State College at 11 a.m. and Morris College at 3 p.m.
