Davenport Hits 1,000-Yard Rushing Mark In Loss To JCSU

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Roderick Davenport (Redshirt Jr./Orangeburg, SC) became the second running back to reach the 1,000-yard milestone in the modern era for Saint Augustine's University, but the Falcons lost a 14-10 CIAA football heartbreaker in the closing seconds to Johnson C. Smith University at Irwin Belk Complex on Saturday, November 1, 2014.

Needing 62 yards, Davenport rushed for 83 yards on 22 carries for the Falcons. His 39-yard run on the first play of the second half put him over 1,000 rushing yards for the season. The CIAA rushing leader, Davenport has 1,021 yards with one game left in the regular season. His season rushing total is the second highest for a Falcons' player in the modern era.

Cyril Davis (Redshirt So./Orangeburg, SC) threw for 221 yards and one touchdown on 20 of 33 passing for the Falcons. Antonio D. Thomas (Fr./Suitland, MD) had five receptions for 35 yards and Claytin Lewis (Fr./Raleigh, NC) caught four passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Davenport was the biggest highlight for the Falcons in a contest they lost in the final seconds. A fourth-down touchdown pass from Cyril Davis (Redshirt So./Orangeburg, SC) to Claytin Lewis (Fr./Raleigh, NC) covering eight yards gave the Falcons a 10-7 lead with 32 seconds remaining in the contest.

Victory seemed certain for the Falcons, but Johnson C. Smith drove downfield and scored with two seconds remaining on a 27-yard pass from Keahn Wallace to Chris Patterson. The Golden Bulls tacked on the extra point for the 14-10 Homecoming victory on a wet and cold day.

Both teams combined for 21 points in the last 3:30 of the fourth quarter after no touchdowns were scored through three quarters and most of the fourth quarter. Michael Lima (Redshirt Sr./Miami, FL) kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter for a 3-0 Falcons' lead, which they took into the fourth quarter. Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS) set up the field goal when he caught a Davis pass and rambled downfield for a 49-yard pass play.

The Golden Bulls (1-5 CIAA, 2-7 overall) gained their first lead in the fourth quarter on an eight-yard Wallace touchdown pass to Fred Scott. The touchdown was set up by a Golden Bulls' interception at the JCSU 35.

The extra point gave the Golden Bulls a 10-7 lead with 3:30 left, but the Falcons marched downfield to move back ahead. The key plays on the drive were a 22-yard pass from Davis to Jordan Turkvant (Redshirt Jr./Orangeburg, SC) and a 26-yard screen pass from Davis to Davenport, who turned a short catch into a long run deep inside Golden Bulls territory.

The Falcons (2-4 CIAA, 2-7 overall) advanced to the JCSU eight-yard line, but faced fourth-and-goal with 37 seconds left. After a timeout, Davis found Lewis wide open in the end zone and hit him with a perfect strike for the go-ahead score.

A long kick return by the Golden Bulls put the ball near midfield and gave them a sliver of hope. A 29-yard pass play gave the Golden Bulls possession at the Falcons' 27, and two plays later they scored the game-winning touchdown.

The loss ruined an outstanding effort by the Falcons' defense, which held the Golden Bulls scoreless until late in the game. Defensive back Anthony Tucker (Redshirt Fr./Garner, NC) led the Falcons with 10 tackles and one pass breakup. Linebacker Edward Carroll (Redshirt So./Gary, IN) added eight tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups.

Defensive end Darius Goodman (Redshirt Fr./Richmond, VA) had six tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss while defensive tackle Chasz Cosby (Fr./Charlotte, NC) finished with six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in a return to his hometown. The Falcons held the Golden Bulls to 0 of 10 third-down conversions and 0 of 1 fourth-down conversions.

The 14 points were the lowest an opponent has scored on the Falcons this season. On special teams, Lima averaged nearly 40 yards on punts in addition to making his field goal and extra point attempts.

For Smith, LeAnder Barney rushed for 140 yards and Wallace completed 4 of 5 pass attempts for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Linebacker Austin Jacques had a game-high 17 tackles.

The Falcons will close the season against crosstown rival Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, November 8. The contest will be played at the George Williams Athletic Complex and game time is 1:30 p.m. on Senior Day.
