Lady Falcons Fall To Johnson C. Smith In Four Sets

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Olivia Porter (So./Bakersfield, CA) recorded 12 kills and Mikayla Pettyjohn (Fr./Jamestown, NC) added eight kills and five total blocks for Saint Augustine's University, but the Lady Falcons were defeated in four sets by Johnson C. Smith University in the CIAA Southern Division volleyball opener for both teams at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, September 18, 2014.
 
Porter added 12 digs for the Lady Falcons, who also got 28 assists and 17 digs from Juliseea Thomas (Jr./St. Croix, US VI). Meghan Mahon (So./Houston, TX) led the Lady Falcons with 23 digs and Marley Parker (Fr./Langley, British Columbia) added 10 digs. Akera McPhaul (Fr./Greensboro, NC) finished with a match-high six total blocks.
 
The Lady Golden Bulls (1-0 Southern Division, 3-1 CIAA, 3-2 Overall) were led by Gracyn Doctor with 12 kills, six digs and five total blocks. Imeshia Jones and Kathleen Janda added eight and seven kills, respectively for the Lady Golden Bulls, who won by very close scores of 25-22, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21. Tukia had 27 assists, 12 digs and four blocking assists and Morgan Hasty led all Lady Golden Bulls with 13 digs. Jones and Jasmin Jackson each had 10 digs. Led by Janda's five service aces, the Lady Golden Bulls held a 16-3 advantage in service aces to gain the victory.
 
The Lady Golden Bulls won the first two games behind the play of Doctor, Janda and Jones. Porter sparked the Lady Falcons (0-1 Southern Division, 1-3 CIAA, 1-7 Overall) to victory in the third game with four kills and three digs. In the fourth game, the Lady Falcons fell behind 18-11, but Pettyjohn totaled four kills during a run to pull the Lady Falcons within 23-21. The Lady Golden Bulls won the match after the Lady Falcons committed two attack errors.
 
The Lady Falcons play again Monday, September 22 when they visit Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C. The match begins at 7 p.m.
